Llanos de Cortés: An Easy Half-Day from Liberia

Llanos de Cortés is my secret weapon for guests with awkward flight times. It's a wide, gentle curtain of water in Guanacaste with an actual sand beach at the base, only ten minutes from Liberia airport. You can land at 11am, swim under a waterfall by 1pm, and still make sunset on the coast.

Location highlights

Where: Bagaces, Guanacaste — ten minutes from Liberia airport.

Drive time: 35 minutes from Tamarindo, 10 minutes from LIR.

Entrance fee: $7, cash only, paid at the community-run gate.

Facilities: bathrooms, changing rooms, small soda for snacks and beer.

11:00am — Land, grab the rental car, drive

Highway 1 north from Liberia, then a clearly marked 2km dirt road. A regular sedan handles it fine in dry season; you might want a 4x4 in October.

12:00pm — Swim and picnic

Walk five minutes down to the sandy base of the falls. Wade out to the middle of the pool — the water is bath-warm, chest-deep, and the current is gentle. You can stand behind the curtain of water and look out through it; this is the photo to take here.

Pack a picnic from the Auto Mercado in Liberia: fresh bread, queso turrialba, salami, mango, and a cold Imperial. Wooden picnic tables under the trees.

2:30pm — Drive to the coast

From Llanos it's 45 minutes to Tamarindo, an hour to Playa Conchal, or 90 minutes to Nosara. You'll be checked into your beach hotel by 4pm with plenty of time for sunset and a swim in the Pacific.

Add this to your week

Llanos de Cortés is included as a stop on most of my Guanacaste airport-pickup transfers. It turns a boring drive into an arrival memory and your jetlag basically dissolves in the pool. Message me to add it to your itinerary.
